How much water do you use?

Household water use varies depending on the type of building, number of people in a house and their personal needs.

On average

We each use around 139 litres of water a day — and most of us don’t realise how quickly it adds up.

The equivalent of 109 litres per property is lost through leakage every day. That’s almost as much as we use! Fixing leaks and reducing waste can make a huge difference.

Shower

  • Power or mixer showers: around 15 litres is used per minute.
  • Electric shower: 6 litres is used per minute.

Keep showers short and sweet. Aim to reduce your shower time by 2 minutes and switch to a water-efficient showerhead if you can to save water and energy.

Bath

  • A full bath uses 80 litres.

Avoid filling the tub to the top and take a shallow bath instead.

Toilet

  • A dual-flush toilet uses between 4-6 litres of water.
  • Older toilets can use up to 13 litres per flush

If you have an older toilet, fit a water saving device in the cistern.

Check for leaks in your toilet and get them fixed. Did you know a leaking toilet can waste up to 400 litres of water per day?

Washing Machine

  • 50 litres per cycle on a normal load
  • 35 litres per cycle on an eco load

Only wash with a full load. Use eco settings to cut water and energy.

Dishwasher

  • 14 litres per cycle for a modern dishwasher.
  • 10 litres per cycle on eco-setting.

Dishwasher looking half-empty? Wait until it’s full before switching it on, and use eco mode to save water and energy.

Washing up by hand

  • 9 litres per minute is used with a running tap.
  • 8 litres per bowl wash.

Don’t run the tap when washing up. Instead, use a washing bowl to use less water.

Car wash

  • 300 litres per hose pipe use.
  • 30 litres per bucket wash.

Skip the hose and use a bucket and sponge, it’s way more water-efficient and your car still gets clean.
