River pollution

Water companies will face the strictest targets on pollution from sewage ever under a new plan to tackle sewage discharges in our waters, set out by government today opens in new window.

Responding to the announcement, CCW’s CEO Emma Clancy said:

An effective sewage system which protects customers, as well as the environment, is vital, customers pay their money to wastewater companies and expect them to provide high-quality, resilient services. We, therefore, welcome the ambitious targets set out today for water companies by Defra. We are also pleased to see that the proposals put the onus on companies to prioritise the spills causing the most harm, wherever possible using green solutions. However, this comes with a huge potential cost. Given the potential impact on water bills, it is essential that any investment decisions protect those customers who are already struggling to pay. CCW are calling for an end to the current postcode lottery of support and the introduction of a consistent water affordability scheme to help protect the millions of households in England and Wales who already struggle to afford their water bill, so it is encouraging to see a commitment to consult on the introduction of this important scheme.
