Company responsibility
The water main is the pipe supplying the street with drinking water. It is owned by your water company, and they are responsible for looking after it.
Your water company is also responsible for:
- Any pipes that connects the water main up to the point where is crosses your property boundary.
- The external stop tap usually located in the public footpath.
- The water meter, if there is one.
Not sure who your wastewater service provider is? You can find the details on our water and sewerage companies page.
Homeowner’s responsibility
The homeowner is responsible for maintaining any water pipes located on private property up to the boundary of the road where the company’s water main is laid.
If there is a shared pipe serving more than one property, it becomes the joint responsibility of all property owners that are connected to it.
If there are any issues with internal pipes and fittings, such as a leak, as a homeowner, it’s your responsibility to arrange for repairs. For advice on leaks within your home, you can find a list of trusted tradespeople in your area via the Watersafe website.
