What if my water company can’t install a water meter?
If you ask your water company to fit a meter under the free meter option scheme, their contractor will usually visit your home to see if a meter can be fitted.
If it would be difficult or too expensive to do so, the company can refuse. This might be because:
- the property is on a joint supply that needs to be separated
- they would have to fit additional meters because there is more than one supply to the property
- plumbing alterations are needed so that a meter can be fitted
You may be eligible to pay an assessed charge as an alternative – the company should let you know about this.
