If you ask your water company to fit a meter under the free meter option scheme, their contractor will usually visit your home to see if a meter can be fitted.

If it would be difficult or too expensive to do so, the company can refuse. This might be because:

  • the property is on a joint supply that needs to be separated
  • they would have to fit additional meters because there is more than one supply to the property
  • plumbing alterations are needed so that a meter can be fitted

You may be eligible to pay an assessed charge as an alternative – the company should let you know about this.

If your company has not clearly explained its reasons for not fitting a meter, you should contact them to make a complaint. If they are unable to help, the regulator Ofwat can look at this type of complaint and make a decision on any dispute you may have with the company.
